I will dedicate my first ever blog to my excellent skill of maneuvering things to my advantage.
So here goes this incident... In my last sem(jan-may,06) of my B.Tech degree...my last course in humanities (yeah, we engineers also study literature and sociology)was Modern Fiction. i havnt read any of the novel other than "the outsider"(by Camus, its outstanding) and a short story(a prussian officer)...and here i was going to give major exam of my course. In the question paper, there was this eternally hit question , "with whom do u identify urself most with the characters you have read in this course", on which i leapt upon just like a tiger leaping on a rabbit(deer would be too big, isnt it?).
Then suddenly this thought crossed my mind that i havnt read enough of novel to identify myself with any of the characters(i knew just 3 characters...and people told me they had 16 characters to choose from). so here i was ...with three characters --Meursault(a recluse), His girl friend(i cant be like her,too girly), and The prussian Officer(who was a homosexual). i desperately needed 7 marks to pass this damn course. So, as usual, i took the less trodden path and decided to prove myself that I AM HOMOSEXUAL (because no-one will dare to do so, so i'll have an extra advantage) and identified myself with prussian officer as a homosexual...i wrote 3pages on that. i vividly described my alternative sexual preferences and my dilemma in indian conservative society. (i even wrote a note in the end,it goes like this, Ma'm plz dont disclose my alternative sexual preference to anyone, thank you).
When i got my answer sheet back ,i had secured 5out of 5 in that answer and there was a note written..."very well written , keep it up. there's no need to worry, our society is opening up . you can surely have your way. and i taken notice to your note. dont lose heart." i secured "C" grade in the course(and i was expecting a "D")
Ha ha ha... i wont say anything now

I pulled a similar stunt in my post-modernism class as a freshman in college. After extensive research on Ayn rand i realized that she was a modernist.
ReplyDeleteMy college professor was already under a lot of trbl from the department for choosing post-modernism for freshmen. I took advantage wrote my paper and explained that while researching on her and realizing she was modernist, I understood what post-modernism finally was.
