IITians drop surname...!!!

Details first- 200 IIT Kanpur students have dropped their surnames that denote their caste and adopted a common surname "Bharat( INDIA)"...so now rahul gupta is now rahul bharat and ashlaq hussain is rechristened as ashlaq bharat now.

What's in a name...cried Shakespeare...but common man of india asks "what's in a surname"...a great deal if its India. It gives away not just your caste, but your standing in the social order and possibly your economic status as well.

Critics are arguing that renaming will not shield them from caste prejudices and social discrimination, but it sure is a step in right direction. The move to drop caste surnames is an acknowledgement of the undesirability of such differentiations. Even OBC and muslims students have decided to accept Bharat as their surnames, expressing oneness and placing country above caste and community.

I find this action absolutely beautiful!!! Reminds me of the sikhs in the 17th century! :p
Honestly, I got chills by reading it! I agree with Varsha that it would definitaly be a bit confusing, as we don't have enough first names to differentiate all of us, and it could lead to some problems both moral and administrative, but the idea is fabulous. And i find incredible that more than 200 students followed this lead- i dunno how many french or swiss ppl would be ready to do this for the good of the society... yes, Europe has become very much independant and selfish... :(
